AM-Meridian Expanding at a Big Three Automaker!
Recently, one of the big three automakers, also a DataCore
customer, decided to expand its use of AM-Meridian within
corporate and additional
locations. This decision was reached after extensive evaluation
and comparison to an enterprise PDM system it already used
elsewhere within the organization. As often happens, this
company eventually determined that its enterprise system could not suitably
address the unique requirements of their dynamic AutoCAD
environment.
If your company is also trying to implement an enterprise
document management system to manage AutoCAD drawings within
engineering,

project like this.

Manage Hybrid Drawings Easier in Meridian 2003
AM-Meridian 2003 introduces a new Hybrid document type that can make
managing hybrid drawings much easier than ever before. This new
Hybrid document type isn't a replacement for custom document
types that are defined in the Meridian Configurator, but is a
new subtype which can modify any custom document type with new
compound document capabilities. Adding these new capabilities is
as simple as checking a checkbox in Configurator and defining
the extensions that belong to the main part of the set and its
subordinate parts.
Creating new hybrid documents is equally as simple. Just drag
and drop two or more files that make up a hybrid set into
PowerUser and Meridian will recognize the corresponding hybrid
parts by their extensions and create a hybrid document
representation in the current view.

Hybrid drawings can also start out as just one file too. After
the main part of a hybrid document set has been created, the
user can later drag-and-drop another part of the set into
PowerUser and Meridian will recognize that it could be part of a
hybrid set and offers to attach it to the existing part. The
figure below shows the context menu that appears when dropping
08593001.CAL into the folder.

Once attached as hybrid document parts, all files in the hybrid
file set will move together wherever the main part of the hybrid
goes, through workflows, assignment to work areas, etc.
The hybrid parts maintain the same revision number as the main
part automatically. The other differences between hybrid parts
and main parts are hybrid parts:
-
Have no thumbnail of their own. They are rendered with the main
part thumbnail.
-
Have no workflow or status of their own since they are linked
to the main part.
-
Do not have custom properties assigned to their document type.
Hybrid parts can also be detached from their main part, and
they can be edited independently of their main part. Hybrid
document main parts can also be searched for on the new IsHybrid
property. Overall, the new hybrid document type in Meridian 2003
is a big step forward in making hybrid documents easier to
control and well worth taking advantage of. |
